About the Artist L A Mestishen, (Loretta Mestishen), received her BFA in Related Arts from Kutztown University. She has an MFA in Writing and Literature from Bennington College and an MS in Clinical Psychology from Chestnut Hill College.
She is an award winning artist, writer, playwright and filmmaker. Her work spans various mediums and styles. While her pastels can be described as contemporary realism, her collages have a decidedly surrealistic twist.
In 2007, L A was injured in a car accident and sustained a mild traumatic brain injury. Much of her collage pieces attempt to explore the effects of her injury and allow the viewer to experience life with a brain injury. She maintains a blog documenting her continued recovery at www.mildlytraumatic.blogspot.com.
L A Mestishen's pastels explore her relationship to the natural world. She enjoys working en plein air when possible, but also creates large scale pastels, up to 4 feet by 8 feet, in her studio. In 2010 she began working with Terry Ludwig pastels on Harris sanded paper.
Her works have been exhibited at the Everhart Museum, the Reading Public Museum, the Pennsylvania State Museum, 3rd Street Gallery, Philadelphia, Villanova University Gallery, the Main Line Art Center, Haverford, the Payne Gallery at Moravian College, Bethlehem, and Studio B in Boyertown.
